The Chemical Cocktail of Jiu Jitsu
A while ago, someone asked me why I love Jiu Jitsu so much. There are LOTS of reasons, but the question immediately reminded me of a concept from Simon Sinek’s book Leaders Eat Last. Sinek breaks down how four “happy chemicals”- endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin- drive human behavior.
I realized that Jiu Jitsu is a perfect storm for all four:
Endorphins: These chemicals are produced through exercise and laughter. They mask physical pain, allowing us to persevere through tough rolls.
Dopamine: This chemical is produced through achievement. It fuels the satisfaction of hitting a technique or being awarded a stripe or belt.
Serotonin: This chemical is produced through contributing to a group. It boosts pride and status within the team.
Oxytocin: The chemical is produced through helping others and physical connection. It builds empathy and trust when we help others train.
Through training, I am exercising, achieving goals, contributing to the team, and helping my training partners reach their own goals. So, Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a workout, it’s a chemical cocktail that makes me feel productive, connected, and happy.
