Beyond A to B: How “Checkpoints” Master the Timing of Jiu Jitsu

You win battles by knowing the enemy’s timing, and using a timing which the enemy does not expect” – Miyamoto Musashi

We’ve started mastering our tools. We’re finally recognizing our targets. But now, it’s time to tackle the single most elusive element in all of grappling: timing.

To understand how timing works on the mats, it helps to look at a very human scenario: dating.

When you’re out in the world trying to find your person, there are certain milestones best saved for later in the process. Take kissing or giving romantic gifts, for example:

  • Too early? It comes off as awkward, intense, or downright weird.

  • Too late? They’ve probably assumed you aren’t interested and moved on.

The exact same logic applies to Jiu-Jitsu.

Important Safety Tip: Please do NOT actually kiss your training partner on the mat. Keep it strictly metaphorical.

The Illusion of the Perfect Technique

When we first teach a technique at our training center, we lay out all the tools and targets. During a demonstration, it looks flawless. The move flows effortlessly from Point A to Point B and so on until it’s done .

But there’s a catch: Your training partner is a human being with their own goals.

Real rolling isn't a cooperative demonstration. Windows of opportunity constantly open and slam shut. Some of these windows stay open for what feels like eons; others last only a fraction of a second. If you expect every move to flow perfectly from one step to the next, you are forgetting that your opponent has a vote in the matter.

Enter the "Checkpoints"

Because your opponent is fighting back, you can't always rush straight to the finish line. This is why learning checkpoints is absolutely vital.

Checkpoints are specific positions along the journey of a technique that offer high levels of control.

  • Pause and Assess: At a checkpoint, you can safely pause with a much lower risk of losing the position.

  • Pivot or Proceed: From here, you can choose to hold, finish the technique, or pivot to a completely different variation depending on how your partner reacts.

By constantly reviewing and recycling your tools and targets, you start to recognize where these safe havens are. You learn where you can anchor yourself before making your next move.

The Next Level: Mind, Breath, and Flow

Once you have the physical checkpoints down, you can begin unlocking the deeper layers of the martial arts. This involves:

  • Breath-work: Regulating your oxygen to keep your heart rate down.

  • The "Fighting Spirit" (Flow State): Often referred to as chi or ki in traditional martial arts, this is the ultimate synchronization of mind, body, and spirit.

When your mind and body are perfectly timed together, your Jiu-Jitsu becomes incredibly powerful. But remember: you can't find your flow state if you're constantly tripping over your own feet.

First step? Master the physical techniques and chains of techniques. Build your foundation, learn your checkpoints, and the timing will follow.
