“I don’t defeat my opponents; they defeat themselves” - Helio Gracie
Submission is king. That is what people say and it is one of the more exciting parts of Jiu Jitsu. But with the frame work that we’ve been using with the help of Rener and Ryron Gracie, I hope that you are starting to see that you have been winning in more places. Winning at defending against attacks with better defenses. Winning at escaping because of opportunity and spotting weaknesses in your opponent’s control. Winning at the control game by playing with different strategies and different tools to make the controls better.
Instead of looking for submission as the goal in dominant positions, I look more for opportunities where I can enter into an attack. I may only move into the position a slight amount, but for me that is a win because I saw it and the details were there. Were all the details there? No, I have a whole school of creative students that stop me from finishing the submissions that I try.
Next, I try to create problems that if my training partner doesn’t address that it will become worse. This I take from my experience in healthcare. Most problems people experience, if they were to address them in an earlier stage, then they would be able to cure or correct the problem. Most experienced students detect the problem and correct the problem. If they don’t, I can always keep moving into the submission and possibly move to a point where there is little or not escape.
I don’t want to be someone that is annoying and only seems to wait and control, so I also look to see if I can make things happen. This can be in a single position, but I also want to see if I can catch it during a scramble. Both have their difficult parts. At this point in my Jiu Jitsu journey, I can say I am more comfortable with forcing it from a single position.
Many of the things I mention above fall into the video that inspired this topic. I highly recommend watching the whole series from time to time.
